I freakin' LOVE Halloween, and this year, I wanted to get into sculpting pumpkins. I've never seen anyone do a THING from Fantastic Four, and it seemed like a natural, since he's already orange. I studied sculptor Ray Villafane's instructional videos and dove in to sculpting this weekend. It took me 2 1/2 hours, and required a bit of elbow grease, but I'm really happy with the results! I can't wait to do more.

I just won an Emmy award for my work on the Simpsons! It was a juried award by the Academy, and 5 other artists were awarded Emmys for their individual contributions to their shows. The awards were for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. The Creative Arts Emmy ceremony was held Sunday night, and will be broadcast on Sat. Sept 21st on the FXX Channel. it was a pretty crazy experience, and one I'll never forget!

It's that time of year again, the little known gathering called San Diego Comicon! I'll be down there selling my wares once again. I'll be located at the RED EYE ART table at D-4 at the top of the 600 aisle in the Exhibitor area. this time, I've put together a sketchbook of just pure life drawings. I've included commentary on the art of life drawing throughout the book. Be there. Mahalo!

Sorry I've been away for so long, but things are pretty hectic lately! Here are some brushpen drawings done this past week. I've really become comfortable with drawing directly in ink for a while now. I do it because you can't erase anything, so it forces you to really scrutinize what you're doing. NO Command+Z to save you...

I do sketch warmups everyday to prepare for the days work. Your work can benefit from just an hours worth of sketching just for the fun of it. Warming up your eyes, brain and arm for drawing can get your day off to a good start. I went to a gesture drawing website and set the timing to two minutes each, and a few more for the more rendered sketches. Drawn with cheap-ass ballpoint pen.

I was given the rare opportunity to study master American Illustrators at the incredible exhibit at the Weisman Museum at Pepperdine University. It's called " Illustrating Modern LIfe" and covers the very best of the Golden Age of Illustration. One of my life drawing students is the Professor of Art history at Pepperdine, and curator of the museum. He was extremely generous in inviting me and other artists to come into the gallery and paint from the masters. I had the greatest time EVER doing studies in watercolor and gouache. These are compositional studies of Dean Cornwell, N.C. Wyeth and Saul Tepper. You owe it to yourself to check out this show in its last week, ending on Sunday. Get down there!
