I've been trying to paint a lot more these days, 'cause I really miss it. Gouache and watercolor are the quickest mediums for me to jam with, because they're so spontaneous. I like the speed, and the happy accidents that give the work a freshness you can't get any other way.

I've really been trying to improve as a painter lately, so that means practice, practice, practice. I just finished a painting of Elsa Lanchester from the Bride of Frankenstein this last weekend (more on that later).I did it for the "October Shadows" art show being put on by Creature Features that's going to happening Oct. 1st. Stay tuned for details. I really love Universal Classic monsters, so painting images from them are a pure joy. Here's a little study of Dr. Pretorius from Bride of Frankenstein.

I just saw "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and really enjoyed it. It's not without it's flaws, but overall very entertaining. I loved especially the "prison break" movie it became when Caesar was jailed! I was inspired to draw some Chimps for fun. Hail Caesar!

San Diego Comicon 2011

The Terracotta Warrior Part 3

Here is the final stage in the creation of the Terracotta Warrior sculpture for the Martial Arts History Museum. I created the straps for the Warrior's bronze armor out of little foam strips and hot glued them on, as well as sticking in all of the little rivets, which were just brass fasteners for scripts. The primer coat was a mix of grey latex interior paint mixed with Hotwire Foam Factories' Foam Coat and a little bit of their Grit texturizer to protect and seal it. I then airbrushed and sponged on several layers of acrylic paint to achieve the aged terra-cotta clay look, and there you have it! All in all, it took 2 1/2 weeks from start to finish. I never worked in this medium before, and never at this scale, but I really had a blast doing it, and can't wait to do more! Sorry I've been away so long everyone, but I've been pretty busy with some interesting projects lately. Sifu Michael Matsuda, a friend of me and my wife is opening The Martial Arts History Museum in Burbank, whose Grand Opening is going to be on June25th, asked me to create a sculpture of a Terracotta Warrior for display. What? Of course I agreed! (I've never done anything like this before). I was just about to go on hiatus from the Simpsons for a few weeks, so that gave me a little time to work on it, although two weeks was pushing it in terms of getting it done! Here is a series of "making of-" shots I took as I was creating it. ( I LOVE "making of-" shots, don't you?) This'll be the first in series of pics on making this. The whole thing is carved out of EPS foam (Extruded Poly Styrene) with HotWire Foam Factory tools, power sanders, and elbow grease. Enjoy.

Hi Everybody, sorry I've been away for a while, but the holiday season always has me up to my eyeballs with stuff to do, and it leaves me little time to update my blog. The first entry for this new year is a piece I just did for my Comic Club's self-published Fanzine back in Hawaii. The theme is a tribute to Frank Frazetta, and I decided to pay tribute to those old men's magazine illustrations he did. Those ink drawings are just amazing!

Life got pretty busy with the Simpsons Movie, and I didn't have time for classes ever since that time. Whew! What a blast this year's Comicon was! It was my first year participating as an exhibitor, and it was a lot of work, but a whole lot of fun as well. Thanks for everyone who bought my sketchbook, it was extremely gratifying to sell my own work to the public. Hopefully this'll be the start of bigger and better things, and I can produce a slicker and bigger book next year. This life drawing is something I did last week, trying to harness the inspirational kick I get every year I come back from the con, and from looking at the best art in person. Gotta keep those fires burning!

HEY! Lookee everybody, I got me a sketchbook finally! After many years of my friends naggin' me to produce a sketchbook, I finally caved and got my head outta my arse to produce this, my first sketchbook. It's filled with some of my favorite stuff culled from the last few years, and it's pretty interesting to go through all of your old stuff to assess what you got. It was an interesting exercise, to see what your output was like, and if any, improvement or decline in one's skill. Anyway, I'm going to be selling this at this years San Diego Comic Con with my friends at the RED EYE ART booth, whom I've also collaborated in a full-color sketchbook as well. Last night we had a great model for life drawing. He dressed up as a pirate, and hit some awesome poses! The real trick was not to get caught up in too many of the details and lose sight of the whole attitude. This particular pose was actually drawn while he was taking a break and we all just kept drawing, unaware that he wasn't posing, but it had a good attitude to it so we asked him to hold it.

I just started back at the Simpsons for our 20th season, so it was great to sit in our weekly life drawing workshops and draw this amazing model, Joe Gatt. Here is a 15 minute pose.

Wow..Me, my fiance Laurie and my friends just had an incredible movie experience last Friday. We all were gathering to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army at the Arclight in Sherman Oaks, and discovered that we had lost our reserved seats to someone else! While initially upset, the employees informed us that the filmaker himself Guillermo Del Toro wanted to see the movie and then have a Q And A afterward. This was a completely unplanned event, and I guess Universal wanted to accomodate him. We had awesome seats, as we bought these tix way in advance. The theater offered to seat us separately and for free , so we accepted. Who are we to turn down the Director of this movie? We then went over to the Arclight restaurant to have a bite to eat, and the Universal staff comes up to us with bags full Hellboy swag to apologize for putting us out of our seats which included a beautiful poster drawn by Mike Mignola autographed by Guillermo, Doug "Abe Sapien" Jones, and Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman! A little later ,who gets sat down in the next booth but Guillermo Del Toro himself and his wife! We all went up to him before showtime to say hello and to tell him that it was us that he took the seats from, and told us that he actually doesn't stay for screenings because he get too nervous! The Universal guys told him right then that the seats were actually for the effects guys from Spectral Motiion who did all of the unbelievable creatures in the film. Guillermo then introduced the movie and had a Q and A afterwards which, if you've ever been to an after screening Q and A with him, is an inspiring experience. All in all, it was an amazing night, none of which was planned at all, but turned out to be one truly fun movie night. Gracias, Guillermo!

Here's a page from my sketchbook at the animatic meeting at Gracie Films on the Fox lot. I just sketched some of the writers while we were waiting for the meeting to start. I was a relief that they resolved the strike and we could all get back to work. I was worried that it could've gone on for a LOT longer. Whew!

The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth

These are the pencils and final piece that I did for the Hawaii State Comic Collectors Club back in Hawaii. These guys are the ones responsible for turning me into the full-on geek that I am today! before that, I had NO idea that a sub-culture of comicbook fans existed. It could very well have set me on the path that I followed all the way to my career in the Animation industry and in the Arts in general. The piece is a tribute to San Diego Comicon and geek culture, all of the subjects in the drawing are actual people, some are my co-workers, convention goers and other various folks who just wave that freak flag high!

Hey everybody! I'm sorry I haven't posted any new artwork lately, so here is something I did last night at the studio. The reason I'm not posting as fast as I used to, is that when I finished on "The Simpsons Movie" I lost access to all the cool stuff they gave me to do the job, which was a beautiful 21 inch Wacom Cintiq loaded with all the latest in Photoshop, Painter, and a large 11X17 scanner, da woiks! I ain't got any of dat stuff at home! So I'm now in the process of acquiring all of the necessary equipment, and as you all know, it ain't cheap. So for now, a snapshot will have to do!

Sorry I haven't been around for a while, but I've been pretty busy to post new stuff lately. I'm just recovering from the San Diego Comicon and a visit to my family in Hawaii, where I did an appearance on the local talkshow with Hawaii comedian Andy Bumatai, plugging the Movie and The Simpsons Handbook. It was fun to play celebrity for a minute! Our movie is doing gangbusters, and I couldn't be more relieved that we're a success! By the way, the picture at the top is of me and my twin brother Phillip, and he's an artist too!

The Simpsons Movie World Premiere

This is it! Last night in Westwood Village, we had the World Premiere "Yellow Carpet" screening of the "Simpsons Movie" at long last. It was a huge gala night with a marching band, limos, the whole nine yards! After seeing the final cut of the movie(God knows, we had SO many different cuts of this film, it's a miracle seeing the thing finally DONE...) We all went over to the Wadsworth theater grounds for a massive after party, full of all kinds of activities, photo ops, dancing, bars, food and drinks. This was probably the biggest Simpsons event we've thrown , and I've been working on this show since the 2nd season! There were plenty of famous faces in attendance as well, some that I got to see: Joe " Fat Tony" Mantegna, Olympian Michelle Kwan, Kevin Smith, Marisa Tomei, Masi Oka from "Heroes", as well as our very own Matt Groening and illustrious Supervising Director of the movie, David Silverman, Homer himself, Dan Castellaneta, and all of my friends and crew members who slaved away at this film at a breakneck pace to get it done. And in record time for an animated feature film! I love you guys! My girlfriend Laurie and I had the best time, and I hope folks will like our little film when it opens this Friday! Go check it out! Woo Hoo!

This was one of the waiters at Great India Cafe on Ventura blvd.(great food!) I was inspired by Marcelo Vignali and Steve Silver to get off my lazy ass and keep sharp by observing more. As an artist, and specifically a character artist, you've got to constantly be observing human appearance and behavior if you want to have the slightest chance of doing work with any kind of quality. Just photo reference isn't enough, you have to feel the presence of a person to get the whole thing , especially that most elusive quality, personality. God knows, I try, and not always succeed, but at least the attempt is worthy. Strive on!

Brush n' Ink

Here's an old piece I did using Sepia ink and black ink applied with a brush. I really admire the artists of the past who could draw the hell out of everything in the classic style. It seems that the skills to draw this way is a dying art, but I truly love this style and learn a great deal emulating it. There is a completeness to the draftsmanship that a lot art nowadays tends to skip over in favor of a lot of "tricks". Go back and look at the guys from the Famous Artist drawing books, like Albert Dorne, Robert Fawcett, Harold VonSchmidt, Norman Rockwell, Dean Cornwell, and of course, J.C. Leyendecker. Studying these guys can help give your work much more authority than just copying the "hottest" artist of the moment.

I'm just really getting acquainted with Photoshop lately, so here's painting I did of King Leonidas from "300" It's quite interesting painting digitally, it's much faster, but the only weird thing is that it doesn't really exist, so that brings into question the intrinsic value of an original painting. Would you get more out of buying a print and hanging it on your wall? Or would an original one-of-kind painting have more significance? I don't know the answer, but it is an interesting debate in our quest for creating lasting images.

Here's a piece I did after seeing "Pan's Labyrinth" I love the originality of this film. Guillermo Del Toro is one of my favorite filmakers. He can go from pop Hollywood style stuff like "Blade II" and "Hellboy", but can still do his own thing with beautiful films like " The Devil's Backbone" and Pan's. Great stuff!

The Old lady was drawn from the film "Babel" When I saw her face, I was blown away how amazing it was. Drawing from life and from sources like DVDs are a great way to practice.
